The afghanistan war killed 15,000 russians, about a quarter by friendly fire, accident or suicide. And 1,000,000 afghans. What will the ukraine war ratios look like?
It has been 1.5 months and Russia has lost around 2,000 killed. But they were also fighting with the "gloves on" to avoid needless civilian casualties up until now.
Now the gloves are coming off and the battle is shifting to an area where there aren't too many civilians, and a large Ukrainian force is trapped in an open steppe where Russia will not need to hold back on the firepower.
Nobody knows how long the war will last. Could be a few more months, or years...
What a nightmare. I truly hope the people responsible for triggering this chain of events with the original 2014 coup are held responsible.
