So then what does that mean for the future of the GOP? Is it bleak without a hyper-charismatic candidate? The GOP will have lost the popular vote in all but 1 election since 1988.
That's a good question. AZ and GA are no longer states which can be taken for granted by the GOP in a neutral political environment, even without Trump or a Trump-like candidate on the ballot. It is highly questionable whether a Haley or a Rubio could put the Blue Wall states in play the way Trump was able to. CO and VA are completely gone. They have their work cut out for them. I need some more days (and more knowledge about the final margins) to think about this question.

Maybe, maybe not. It seems as if Trump lost the decisive states in the EC (MI/PA/AZ, with GA as the wildcard) based on two things: black turnout was up, presumably due to the summer of police violence/BLM protests. And erosion in the suburbs, predominantly in the more upscale ones. This erosion appears to be fueled more by upscale suburbanites being turned off by his conduct and rhetoric rather than his policies.
