http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnegy9fgARAI think this is the perfect example for the absurd moment America is in. Trump might be the most morally flawed individual to occupy the presidency in quite some time... he's probably paid for abortions personally. Yet simultaneously he becomes the first president to attend a March For Life rally, the most morally righteous issue of our time.
The political calculus is very simple really: neither Trump nor his base (secularized to mildly religious, culturally conservative, economically moderate, very receptive to populism) care that much about abortion. But evangelicals care a lot about it, and they're not a "natural fit" for Trump, yet needed in any electoral winning strategy for the GOP.
By attending this rally, Trump can score political points with a vital part of his electoral coalition that doesnt cost him with his populist base, and the only ones on the liberal side who care about abortion a lot are people who would vote against him anyway. Furthermore, by taking a strong pro-life stance, Trump can give wavering evangelicals a reason to stick with him. It gives evangelicals an argument to rationalize their support for a man whose words and personal conduct are in stark violation of the values and norms they hold dear.
