The 2018 guidelines claim that “the ACLU is committed to defending speech rights without regard to whether the views expressed are consistent with or opposed to the ACLU’s core values, priorities and goals.” But directly contradicting that assertion, they also cite as a reason to decline taking a free-speech case “the extent to which the speech may assist in advancing the goals of white supremacists or others whose views are contrary to our values.”
In selecting speech cases to defend, the ACLU will now balance the “impact of the proposed speech and the impact of its suppression.” Factors like the potential effect of the speech on “marginalized communities” and even on “the ACLU’s credibility” could militate against taking a case. Fundraising and communications officials helped formulate the new guidelines.
They have not explicitly abandoned their free speech principles and done a clean break yet and still caution their language by saying they still are committed to defending speech regardless of its content- but they have codified the means by which they are perverting that mission and undermining the right. They are explicitly endorsing the discretionary and subjective discrimination against speakers they disagree with politically, which all too deliciously is ironic considering how many times they've argued that discretionary policies of ostensible neutrality with discriminatory intent and impact are themselves institutionalized discrimination.
I feel like I'm beating a dead horse saying it, but the 2018 ACLU are a bunch of cucks who would go out
protest the 1969 ACLU instead of supporting their cases. The real joy of this is that some whistleblower leaked this internal document and the ACLU is now investigating the leak
