iirc, the news about him preying on teenage girls in his 30s only broke after the republican primary, that is, when it was already too late to get him off the ballot.

in the general election, the ultra-conservative voters in alabama had a tough decision to make: vote for a guy who politically stands for their beliefs and values, but whose personal behavior tramples on those values - or vote for a guy with impeccable personal conduct, but who politically stands almost diametrically opposed to their values and beliefs.
