I keep hearing the same shallow criticism of Trumps economy which is that the labor force isn't at it pre-recession levels and it just shows the deep ignorance of these people on the subject.

Boomers starting to retire is actually a pretty big variable why the labor force participation rate has been declining. Baby boomers are a massive slice of the working class that have and continue to leave the labor force. In a way you had the perfect storm, an economic recession combined with the first boomers reaching retirement age. Other variables like technology advancement & outsourcing also play some impact in the LFPR decline.

You're thinking of Reagan. Obama grew the private sector massively.

More specifically though, it grew massively under Obama, not that the president really does the growing under either administration.
