70 Years Ago Today, Something Important Happened

Yep, yep. Billy Crystal was born.
The movie City Slickers would not have been the same without him.

Crystal is the least entertaining cast member. He's the Seinfeld of that movie, somewhat normal guy thrust into a cast of odd characters. Made even worse in the second movie when Lovitz joins Stern and steals all the good lines from Crystal. His main contribution to the film is to look so completely metropolitan that he seems out of place in the wild west setting. Any number of new york jews could have stepped in without a contractual requirement to wear a mets hat.

He would have been sorely missed in Princess Bride however.

The 2nd movie isn't worth discussing. As for the first...he did take a baby cow home to the city. That should count for something.

the second movie is better than the first, tho. They started the "beloved character has died but thank god he had a twin that the same actor can play" schitck that stayed in movies for decades. Beerfest among other comedies consistently stole the idea. Lovitz ability to instantly say how many letters are in a word might be my favorite bit. The ending was well done and the whole thing being a prank gone wrong didn't feel like a cheap deus ex machinma.

I think that's the ONLY thing (the twin) that even got the 2nd movie to the screen.
In the 1st, how could you not love the coffee grinder starting the stampede, the brother that could match the proper flavor of ice cream to any meal, the hot babe, the bringing IN of the herd.

that is for sure the best moment in the film. and i like the movie, i just think 2 was better. the 90s had a lot of sequels that were better, it was an odd decade.
