There's decades of precedent in not attacking countries that intercede in regional wars. Korean War, Vietnam War, Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Russia would be suicidal to make such a warning, because the assistance wouldn't stop. They would have to either act on their threat or lose any credibility for the future.
