I dont even see how this is major news. I mean, I take it for granted that political systems ferment corruption. Either In Ireland, England, The US, Russia, China, Eurozone, big deal. This is not a new dawn, its just same old same old. I really dont see a need to finger point.
its like the scouts or w/e it is in YOUR country. there were scandal's decades ago "oh but its all fine now", but just wait 6 months and there will be another scandal, because adults and children always creates that risk. the same logic can be applied to politics. where there are interests and money someone can be paid, and that payment can and often times is, a bribe, aka corruption.
Various sources say this is a big deal. I just take a few quotes from this BBC article
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63941509Quote
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the accusations were "very serious" and called for the creation of a new ethics body to oversee the bloc.

Watchdogs and opposition MEPs said the bribery investigation could represent one of the biggest corruption scandals in the parliament's history.
What makes it more painful is that the S&D group (Socialists and Democrats Group) are a bunch of so called progressives that love nothing more than accusing others of the stuff they are now being investigated for
