I don't know. I mean, I'm biased, but what do conservatives actually stand for or promote? Being "anti-Left" is not, in itself, much of a position.
Conservatives are trying to engage in the culture wars as much as possible to distract from the fact that:
America was certainly founded under the principals of classical liberalism, which doesn't mean what most people think it does, and even the republican party exists squarely in the middle of it.
Having a conversation with the public that, in the "big picture of global politics" that American conservatives are really just another type of liberal, is too confusing for the average US voter, and it's much easier for people to identify a group of people as being "the enemy" and the group of people they support as being "friends."
So, the political culture in America ends up being groups of people with similarities, rather than people who share in similar political ideologies.
Politicians would rather try to find common ground with people on nonpolitical issues rather than divisive political ones, and the tactic is generally referred to as identity politics.
That's why the "owning the liberals" campaign has been so effective for the right. It's a simple strategy that goes hand and hand with identity politics.
Conservatives see this tactic as "winning the culture war" where as academic types of people look at what they are doing and think "wow, so they are kicking themselves in the balls to own the liberals? okay... /shrug."
But, that's how identity politics ends up playing out. The right wingers love it, the left hates it, and people like me (independents/moderates) just laugh at it.
Also, maintaining the views of classical liberalism in modern culture doesn't play out well, the libertarian party is somewhat close to being purely liberal and they seem like a bunch of hippies with guns to most people. The identity element doesn't work out in their favor. edit: Their political positions might sound good, but once most people see what the crowd of people clapping looks like, most people turn away from them.
