I was watching a podcast where they called people who make less than 150k a year literal slaves. They said to be happy and an average joe you at least need to make 300k-500k a year as a couple.

Thoughts?

I am personally set for life and don't have to be a # in the system but i want to know what you guys think (The people who sadly have to work daily to stay afloat)

Basic food is 800usd per year.
Basic housing, like a small room in a shared flat, is like 2000usd per year. Including electricity, heating and hot water (of course in limited quantity).
Clothing 200usd.
Basic hygiene and cleaning 200usd.
Another 200usd for some basic culture like a shared internet, a computer every 7 years, single subscription netflix-like that you swap from time to time, some older games that sell cheap.
Beer/coke/crisps 100usd (big coke bottles are more cost effective than cans).
Tram/bus yearly ticket OR a basic small, used car: 500-1000usd.
Mobile plan and a phone every 2-3 years: 300usd.
Forgot anything?
As long as you are healthy, 4300-5000usd per year is often enough, and anything else is extra that you can either save or spend on luxuries like holidays.
Add 2500usd for every children.
Of course if you live in an expensive place like new york then the prices will be higher.
Now the things get more difficult if you have health problems, as then the costs might get basically unlimited.

i should show my gf or mom this post real quick and let them get a good laugh in

Where do you find the calculator for the us average city? All the calcs I can seem to find are comparing one place to another.

Do you have children? I don't think there's any reason to live without family. Labor is a means to an end.

Doable if you’re single, I agree. I couldn’t stand living with people, aside from my SO and children. If/when my mortgage is paid off, basic utilities and expenses, aside from grocery, comes to ~$8000/yr. $15000 (currently double) would be doable when I no longer carry a mortgage with wife and 4 kids, located Midwest USA. However, I am a bit on the extreme-side when it comes to budgeting and saving.

Now take people in remote areas who still make at or below national averages, in many cases vastly lower due to no economic activity.

My monthly food bill eating rice and food I catch myself is 800 dollars. Oh well it's not much of the population that lives remote.

It's far more pathetic to be "set for life" and still be obsessed with jsp than it is to work for 50k a year.

I dont understand you, you say you eat rice, rice is very cheap, like a dollar per kilo. How does that make you 800usd monthly?
How do you 'catch food yourself", do you catch wild fish, have a cow for milk and farm your own vegetables etc?
I just hope you dont go bear hunting, it could be dangerous

From experience money also just makes you not live in the moment. For a while I used to spend hours a week looking at my next purchase, endlessly looking at homes for sale that I have no use for. I don't need rental income or even want to allocate my time to doing that but you have this constant hole burning in your pocket.

You spend all this time thinking about your grand early retirement when life is passing you by in your absolute prime when you should still just be piss and viniger enjoying life.

Took a few years to drop the mindset of always thinking about the future. Now I live life camping and fishing or hunting every weekend to my hearts content living mostly week to week.

For instance it's 7 dollars for a can of coke here or 26 for two liters of apple juice. A small bag of rice is 50 dollars. I'm 220lbs and very athletic. I fish trout and Arctic char, hunt caribou and muskox. I probably eat 3500 to 4k cal most of the time daily.
