Instead of forgiving debts, punish the colleges and universities for their ridiculously inflated tuition costs. Punish the book sellers, too.

This is stupid and solves nothing in the long run.

Yep. The books are a joke. Highly inflated and a new edition every year with minor updates.

got like a 30$ tablet and torrented all of the books from sophmore year on.

had one prof cry that my worksheets were printed and not from the physical workbook, threatened to not accept my assignments, but a trip to the head of dept fixed that up.

Bad policy, probably bad politics, but I'll benefit. Because I'm not like you others, I wish he wouldn't have done it.

I agree that it's bad policy but why is it bad politics? Forgiving 10K in debt is one of the few student loan forgiveness policies that have majority approval.

Sounds like a lot of folks calling a sow's ear... a silk purse.
It's been a while, but 10K won't cover the books for 4 years, but it will increase inflation.

I don't think it actually is bad politics in the current situation, but I can easily see why it could be: this is a selective, injust handout to a comparatively privileged group - it is surely within the realm of possibility that the number of people pissed off by this policy could be greater than the number of beneficiaries.

I wouldn't put too much stock in polls on an issue like this one either. All "free stuff"-policies poll better in the abstract than after they're implemented.

In unrelated news, tuition sharply rises $10k over 4 years on average

-some non-partisan analysis on tuition rates about 2-3 years from now
