LOL. The only reason you didn't grow up speaking German (assuming you'd be born in the first place) is because the United States is NOT defined by slavery.
Two world wars, the introduction of first the ARPAnet and then the http-based Internet, all the US. And the ideas for many of our greatest achievements came from immigrants from Europe, Africa, and Asia who could not gain any investment or support in their home nations.
The #1 historical note about the United States is our willingness to invest massive resources into innovation. Let's not talk about Tesla, let's not talk about any of the myriad of shit that is new. Slaves had nothing to do with it. The invention of the automobile, the airplane, the light bulb...
Slavery is neither a defining historical note, nor does it's existence in our early history have anything to do with what the US is today. It's inarguable that we would not be as advanced of a nation today if people of all colors had not participated in the innovation and creativity. But to say, "Slaves built that!" No they did not. Slaves did not build our millions of miles of roads, slaves have not maintained those roads. Slaves did not build our water treatment plants. Slaves did not build anything relating to your every day life today, unless you work at a select few old buildings, such as the White House. And even there, the architects attempted to hire only free people (regardless of color) to build, but they did not have enough workers, so they contracted to Virgina for more workers. Virgina was a slave state, they sent slaves and foremen. However, even that gives slaves too much credit. The whitehouse today is much different than the white house of then. You know... The light bulbs, central air systems, defense systems, every piece of technology, the underground bunker... Yeah, I mean, there's no need to list everything.
The US already acknowledges it's issue with the slavery of it's past. Since you're French, why don't we talk about France? Not only were the French participants in slavery, the French had a very lucrative slave trade from the 1500's going well into the 1800's. Tell me, where is France's "Sorry about Slavery" day?
