Not to mention the part where they were already victimized by an antifa car ramming. So not just peaceful protests, but terrorist attack victims, at least insofar as BLM has been spinning those kinds of incidents.
If this is like the famous boiling frog scenario (nevermind the frogs were actually lobotomized), then perhaps this is the kind of incredible escalation so dramatic that it will cause the frog to push out of the pot.
How much can one man ratchet up the authoritarianism without even a fig leaf of justification, before the pushback reaches critical mass? In a sane world, this declaration would result in Trudeau being forced out of office by recall, deposition, coup or the more blunt option, within 48 hours, because that's how noxious tyranny has been dealt with in civil society. There's such a list of premiers already lining up to denounce this and even his own party members weren't advocating this or were saying it was unthinkable and unjustifiable. He didn't slowly ramp up into this, he disappeared for a week and returned with an abrupt first-option-last-option and protecting-your-rights-by-revoking-your-rights. I'd gander that its actually imaginable that the backlash reaches enough force to lead to Trudeau's resignation by the end of this saga. How do you go back from "I invoked martial law to suppress peaceful political protests"? Its a mix of crossing the Rubicon and raping a vestal virgin. All the controversy, all the escalation, none of the justification, none of the benefit.
Most people regard Trudeau as a doofus and man-child, put this isn't going to be remembered as idle petulance. He took it straight from a zero to a hundred and whipped out martial law, arbitrary imprisonment and seizure of bank accounts for the purpose of suppressing protests against his mask/vaccine mandates.
