Believe me - I don't think Republicans are all innocent either - far from it.
I don't dispute the below, either regarding how it was used - I, too remember reading why the change was made (I still didn't agree personally, but, that's irrelevant).
But in my opinion, this is why the old statement still rings true - "never set a precedence". It was still manipulated to make a process easier for them at the time (and please correct me if I am wrong, but, I believe it was done after Obama had a really rough midterm in 2010 and still hadn't recovered).
To me, opening that door altogether was a not a good idea and we're beginning to see some of the ramifications of that now I think.
Those are just my thoughts, anyway.
