Class war would interfere with their interests. Only if the right wingers on this forum clued into the fact that liberals in America are not left wing
Policy must be considered on at least a 2-dimensional scale, with an economic and a cultural axis. Democrats definitely are left-wingers on the cultural axis. In terms of economic policy, they are still very much in favor of big government policies, as they always have been - the thing is just that the interests of big business and big government have gotten increasingly aligned over the past 10-20 years. Conversely, the interests of small businesses and multinationals have diverged over the same timeframe.
All in all, this yields the weird configuration of American politics that we're seeing today, with the Republicans moving in a more populist-nationalist direction and increasing their appeal with working-class voters while Democrats have an increasingly disjointed coalition between racial minorities and upscale whites.
