That's the problem right there. Popularity and celebrity driven status shouldn't be a primary selection process.
There should be minimum requirements met first. Just like most jobs. For instance one should have all their mental and public speaking facilities tip top shape. Which is like at least 1/2 the job is to be able to address the nation.

Physical attributes are not as important however it's preferable they should have some basic fitness and not poop their pants uncontrollably

I want to add something: presidential speech-writing should be made illegal. When the Potus addresses the nation, I want to hear what he has to say, not some ghost-writers' thoughts.

They write all of our bills now so pretty much.
