Depends. If you're going into a science related field then experience at these prestigious universities can be invaluable. You get access to the best instrumentation and newest techniques from the highest output laboratories.

I definitely missed out on a lot of good experience going to state school.

I learned on all 15 year old instrumentation.

So I applied to places and I'm like "Yeah, I have a very strong background in GC and such" and they're just like "Oh, that instrument is ancient. We don't need somebody who knows all the analysis on that instrument. That's all automated now. We need the super advanced stuff on the newest instruments that have multiple columns and MS attached at the end".

So that was fun.
