The thing is that this crisis looks very similar to how the Great Recession started, at least at first glance. An overinflated housing market and a financial system sitting on a ton of bad credit.
So yes, it is a bit surprising if you ask me that this situation hasn't received at least a tiny bit more attention in Western media. A story like "could Evergrande be the next Lehman?" should be interesting for those reading the NYT or the Atlantic and such. It is of course not a story for the average plebs, but should play well with the consumers of more highbrow publications.
