But also I think it’s funny that people like you want to force taxpayers to spend $80,000 a year housing someone for $500 in property destruction. Big government and fiscal irresponsibility as long as both target minorities you don’t like is the entirety of your ideology.
The rationale is that being sufficiently tough on crime will deter criminals from not just the felonies but also the minor crimes. By this logic, incarcerating X persons at $80k/year would be worth it if that prevents 20*X petty crimes.
Someone following this line of thought is, of course, stuck in the 90s clinging to a discredited approach. In reality, it's far more complicated than that.
Generic tough on crime policies are not effective unless they're coupled with social work, rehabilitation programs and improving the social conditions underlying the crime. (Which is what happened in NYC during the 90s: gentrification and an improved local economy drove poverty down, and that was the ground on which Giuliani's zero tolerance policy could succeed.)
