the origin of the "Proud Boys" is inarguably a joke, it was a response on Gavin's show to what he perceived as oppressively feminism im the culture generally. Quickly this became a running joke, and again quickly it became a social club aimed at men drinking together in bars with other men. and AGAIN quickly it then became a close nit social group that stole from fight club an initiation ritual to get into a fight, covered under the guise of a joke, but in reality getting out of hand already. then it began to be a "security force" for Gavin and other speakers, namely at Berkeley and similar speaking events. Then became a counter protester group that had chapters and began to organize in earnest with charters, manifestos, rules, etc.

the issue is from origin to full on out of hand white male only fight club was so fast that it gets missed. given the pace im not sure the context matters all that much in the grand scheme, but its still true. Gavin himself avoids talking about it much because he risks exposing himself as someone who took advantage of a false narrative (his apparent unsafety) to get free PR out of making people clash for his success.
