Regardless of party it always seems like the current parties policies are based on them keeping control for the next few terms at minimum. Obviously when running a country you need a long term view but the view of we will borrow it all now and by 203X our increases to corporate and personal tax will cover it assumes the other platform will keep those tax policies. Voters also have goldfish brains so if it does not pan out and the current party loses control and everything crashes because the new party taking control didn't follow through with the old parties policies the old party can just blame the new one saying they're crashing the economy when in fact it was due to the previous parties decision.
Politics in a nutshell really.
There is a very clear agency problem happening in politics. It's been around for ever but now it's much more pronounced. Fact of the matter is most politicians will always do what gives them the best odds to make it back into office. Many of them have only a few years to say hey I got this district, interest group something and to keep PAC money coming and to have something to show to voters. It's political suicide to say, hey this level of spending is unsustainable so lets roll back certain programs.
People keep bringing up military spending, yes that should be lower I agree and 90% of the wars we got involved in we never should have, but it's dumb whataboutism because it ignores the 800 lb gorilla in the room which is social programs and now we have climate change spending coming out of the woodwork wanting to gobble as many dollars as it can.
It's really sad though, because majority of voters want gibs now and are either too stupid to understand or just don't care about long term repercussions. The people that understand are generally in the minority and are usually drowned out so nothing will change.
