I don’t think it is smart to openly reveal one’s true political views/opinion in real life. There is a scene in the Godfather which Don Corleone scolds his son for telling another mafioso his true opinion on selling drugs. This gives their enemy insight that the Corleone family members are not on the same page. The enemy knows that they are weak.
However, people can be very sneaky and sometimes don’t need to hear a word. They can read your body language while others are engaged in political discussion. Therefore, talking about politics is not the only way to reveal one’s true intentions. And obviously everyone here knows about baiting. No need to elaborate on that.
And there are the ones with the big ego and intelligence, that can discuss politics without ever giving themselves away. There is a character named Pariston Hill in the japanese anime, Hunter X Hunter, that exemplifies my point to perfection. People in real life do this all the time, but there is always the risk that someone smarter than you can figure out your intentions. In that anime, Pariston’s rival, Ging, was able to give him a run for his money.
So what is the best decision?
Give into your ego and take risk?
Or stay away and risk nothing?
Or mix it up and be selective?
My mentality is this: if you know your target is weak, then discussion is low risk. If your target is strong, then discussion is high risk. If you don’t know anything about your target, then that is also high risk. The guidelines of trolling aren’t much different.
