I don't think there should be a license, but if your dog attacks and kills someone do to your personal incompetence you should be held legally liable.

There are bad dogs. Dogs are bred from stock, if the stock is bad, there's a good chance the dog will be bad. If a breeder is selling a violent dog as anything other than a dangerous personal protection animal they should be held just as liable as the above.

this.

At the end of the day there's no sure fire way to predict what animal will be good or bad (of any breed) so the liability should be 100% on the owner. Don't get a dog unless you're willing the take all the precautions necessary to be a responsible dog owner. (combination of training and lack of opportunity for the dog to do something that you cant stop).

I think most dog issues arise from 1 of 2 things:

1: people just don't understand how much work having a well trained dog is and they get lazy or are just stupid. (majority)
2: people forget that animals have their own mind and just because they have responded to some training as expected doesn't mean their obedience is infallible (much less dog issues arise from this than #1 IMO but it does happen)

The breeder has an enormous impact as well. We need to hold incompetent breeders responsible somehow.

I hate licensing, but if this is a problem we may need to control supply by licensing the breeders of dangerous breeds.

that's not exactly true.

https://evolution-outreach.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12052-018-0090-x

while simultaneously extracting the 10% most tame to interbreed they also extracted the 10% most aggressive. the 2 pools diverged wildly away from each other. even in samples not raised in group settings, done to counter the argument of parental learned behavior accounting for all of the resulting tameness and aggression.

I honestly don't know enough about breeders (logically I can see how it would increase the likeliness of issues but it seems like there's still going to be good and bad dogs from any breeder).

I am curious though why you hate licensing if feel you the standard of breeders is a big issue (for the record, I'm 100% not poking at you here I'm honestly trying to educate myself on the topic lol)

Licensing can be problematic because the government is unlikely to be able to develop and implement a licensing framework by itself. It's going to have to outsource most of that work to "experts", which in this case probably means the AKC or something similar.

Those 3rd parties, much like lobbyists, are interested parties in their own right, and often make decisions which maximize their own revenue and not those of the consumer.

pitbulls, staffordshire terriers and so on should be completely banned and every existing dog of these breeds should be put down without exception

they were bred to be inherently aggressive and feel no pain, they are unpredictable monsters

kill this trash, there is no reason to have them

there are so many decent dogs to choose from, only scumbags possess these dangerous breeds, because it makes them feel stronger
