That's true, gubernatorial elections are the type of race where partisanship plays far less of a role than in presidential/congressional races. It's still a huge factor, but not as insurmountable as trying to unseat a Republican senator in Kentucky...
Just for the record: Massachusetts and Maryland currently have a Republican governor, while Kansas and Kentucky have a Democrat in the governor's mansion.
