did you just quote your own post
yikes
Yes. I'll quote it as many more times as is needed for you to get it. Your party-based grandstanding on this topic is useless and blocks people from real information that's pertinent to the topic.
Oregon is Blue. Solid blue. It's not a swing state. We have fewer "republicans" in office than even California. We are high tax, high healthcare, and try to go as green on power as we possibly can. Over a million people (a quarter of our population) lost power due to the storms. 150,000 still have no power. Is that because of Republican policy or small government? No. Is it because of "green power" or big government or Democratic policies? No.
It's a failure in infrastructure practices to take extreme temperatures into account. It's a very, VERY well-documented problem, and is a concern any time a major storm comes around.
And the impact is far greater than "just" the power grid. Our public transportation system in the Portland Metro area completely suspended all service. Buses were to be expected. But the Max (light rail) tends to run. Why did they stop? The switches froze solid, and even though this happened some 11 or 12 years ago and was more extended, aka they KNEW it was a problem, they hadn't engineered any kind of fix to prevent the issue from recurring in the future. The last time, the storm kept us buried in snow and freezing temperatures for a couple weeks. This time it was only a couple days. Last time, they took blow torches to the switches to thaw them out and keep service going after the first day or so. This time, they just kept service down until the switches thawed. Need to use public transport to get food or go to work? Not our problem.
Again, it's not a failure of any given party or state. It's simply a reality that most infrastructure cannot take all eventualities into account and still be cost-effective to build. So we allow the most unlikely scenarios to slide, and build for the 99.9%.
