Healthier political discourse is a positive step. Biden has made an effort to give voice to that, which is commendable. We will have to wait and see if his party can follow through on it. When Pelosi says that impeachment is unity, she is mistaken. Biden will need to weigh whether impeachment is worth it.

The larger problem is that "unity" is difficult when culture and values don't align, and they are clearly further apart than ever. The problem is not "facts", but the frames through which facts are being interpreted in order to construct radically different world-views. We have lost TV as a universal medium through which culture could be ritually reinforced. We are going to need to find new symbols to rally around, and I don't see any on the horizon.

I fundamentally disagree that facts are not the problem. Gay marriage had Republicans constantly making things up to say that gay parents would harm kids (you literally did this for years). Anthropogenic climate change has been a certainty for over 20 years and it took Republicans as recently as 2015 to get on board. Universal healthcare is another example where we still actively see disinformation against it.

Values are certainly an issue, but facts are squarely favored by one side of the aisle.

I'm simply not interested in common ground - with Republicans or Democrats. Until the duopoly is gone, nothing's gonna change. I think I'm just gonna sit back and watch them burn this shit to the ground. Sweep up the ashes, and form a better society after.

I can agree with the bolded. I'd wage a sizable chunk of people wouldn't know what position their candidate actually takes on various policies, you're either red or blue, and you have to have a malice towards whatever you are not. Furthermore, I think social media only exacerbates the issue. Just like me giving my shitty opinion on here everyone else can too now.

indeed. look at this thread about unity, its person after person lashing out at “those who dont vote the way they want”. nothing to do with unity

If you want the duopoly to go away we need to advocate for a better system than first past the post, which can only have two parties.

I'd gladly join you in this endeavor brother!

I agree and have lamented it for years. A new Constitution is necessary. The current one has either allowed the current state of affairs to happen, or been powerless to stop it. Either way, it is useless.

I am unified with that message.

He brags how he lives around nobody and then says 300k americans killed is a hoax. Has to live under a rock in the middle of nowhere.

I wouldn't say it's USELESS but we definitely need reform. The problem is that we can't even agree what the PROBLEM is.

I think this is going to happen (slowly but surely). The Democrats made some serious reforms in their primary to do the following:
1) Prevent unified insurgents from taking over (don't give all delegates to someone who gained only 30% of the vote)
2) Allow for greater representation within the party (if someone gets 30% of the vote, they should get roughly 30% of the delegates)

Obviously, the above won't work particularly well if the party isn't unified and you end up with a contested convention. With ranked choice being tried throughout the country, I think we're going to reach a point where it's used everywhere in the next couple decades.
