fair enough
the capitol (and entire capital in a larger sense) is supposed to be accessible to the public. our elected officials are supposed to be accessible to their constituents. they are elected representatives not rock stars (unfortunately most of society, myself included, have permited this blending of the lines). those are our buildings; they just work there. almost every building is still fairly easily accessible even with all the increased security measures since 9/11 and the patriot act. storming it is definitely beyond the pale, a more measured approach would be better (ie: chanting and kneeling). but precedent has been set by ‘peaceful protestors’ over the past 4 years. in fact theres almost a damn playbook one can follow at this point.
for sure damage could be done. this is a daily possibility. the capitol was on fire in parts for days in this past summer with some of those very senators praising the mob’s efforts. a very nimby approach. only a few have been consistent in their condemnation and that should be applauded.
for safety (heh) we could go to a militarized capital with two armed soldiers on every corner and an entire unit guarding entry to buildings. i dont want that
the point of having only a few buildings on a hard lock down is to not have the need for guards on every corner and the ability to leave the capital itself open, and even many parts of buildings open to the public in non-covid times.
my capital building in WI is open to the public 99% of the time, u can walk in and see most of the building. and its a beauty. but to expect i could walk into Evers office or expect to be able to sit in on an active senate proceeding is silly. we would have never lasted as a country until now if we had an open senate, too many people would have been shot.
they aren't our buildings, they're the federal govt's. the point of this distinction is that the federal govt isnt a person, even if swamp demons stay there decades too long. it belongs to no one, because it belongs to everyone. and when it belongs to everyone u cant do something to it unless u get everyone's ok. well we elect people to speak for us, so its theirs, and by extension ours.
to be quite frank the narrative that this is somehow public property, even an active session of congress doing the EC vote, is one of the most hair brained ideas yet that ive heard. this reads to me as totally batshit fucking insane. the ramifications are insanity. everyone will die.
