so you must decide contextually: hit the elderly person, but if hitting the elderly person will also result in you hitting a car travelling from bottom to top thru their green light with right of way, hit the child

The red/green is for the crosswalk/pedestrians, not vehicles.

the pedestrians are guided by the lights they have to crank their neck 90 degrees to mind?.. so when oncoming traffic sees green, they are supposed to interpret that is being go ahead and stop so the pedestrians who can has to choose between paying attention to their path and the light in the opposite direction can walk safely?
