the individual no, but we are coerced under penalties of fines and prison to contribute to an annuity scheme. our social security is rolled into this. it is 6.75 of the “payroll tax” - half is paid by the employee half by the employer
if you are self-employed, you pay both ends of it
all the money went into a general fund since it’s inception. our beloved govt didnt even put it into an index fund
Oh. That's the same with our CPP, same rules as well. Our rate is 5.45% for both employer and employee. Same rules with self employed as yours.
We have no control and I won't even get it most likley since your payment after 65 (typically, you can pull early or delay it) is clawed back 15 cents for every dollar earned over approx 77k.
I'm quite certain our system is currently more punishing since I'll never even see all that money I contributed to my Canada pension plan.
It makes sense since I'll be earning much more than the average person in retierment but still hurts I'll never see that money.
Our system is also ancient, it was designed when life expectancys were far shorter so by the time I retire anyway its likley cpp will be depleted. Gov't never predicted having to pay people from 65 to 85. Used to be 65 to 70 when it was initially designed
