You are good to question the status quo advice. The USA has a lot of fuckery when it comes to people and wages, and its ever changing. For example, a high school level student teacher (graduate student) will work ~12 weeks without pay/benefits and pay for the slavery experience. Does that seem right to you?
Kamahl16, perhaps you could re-locate to improve your 'lower class' situation? For example, I could rent a modest sized flat in rural MN for 4 months, but only get 1 month in the Twin Cities for similar rent. Personally, 'lower class whoring' seems more like a city symptom in my region. There are def poor sobs out here, but they are really good at fixing shit with crappy parts.
