The most recent draft set I enjoyed the most was probably Dominaria.

Don't get me wrong though I still have some fun games with the new sets in Limited. I just happen to have a preference of a slower game.

Like Plague though, I am pretty much drafting only. I play the occasional ladder games just for the weekly rewards if after one / two drafts in the week I didn't get them.


As far as SJW stuff in games, I don't know.

I grew up not at all being able to make any cross comparison between these fantasy worlds I loved and historical or modern racism, I think because I actively don't think about it. I don't think 99.9% of the fantasy audience , white black , purple or other colour do either.

In the world of the forgotten realms black to me is reincarnation, dredge, demons, death, decay, and that has no carry over to race. It has more carry over to relatable things like a graveyards, hell, things that go bump in the night, etc. I never though, black is bad and there's some type of carryover there portraying black people as bad.

I would like to think I am not a racist person, so the hero can be black and day, he could just as easily be a representation of the light and nothing conflicts in my brain. I don't associate skin colour with good or bad. Now if they were a drow elf or something, I associate that with chaos and "bad" but that is because of the lore and fantasy built around them not because they have dark skin.

For those who like Fantesy, I am about halfway through John Gwynne's books, pretty enjoyable. Sort of typical fantasy stuff but some of the characters have some grit to them and overall Id say its pretty enjoyable.

the new sets inside of a draft are fine, its when they mix in with old sets that it gets crazy.

like my wife plays a Freyalise Elf Tribal deck, for YEARS there were almost no changes. a few rares came out that were decent, but not worth the 2-5$ per card to upgrade. we just ran uncommon or even common sac to destroy target or all _____ type cards. then in the last 3 or so years almost every card in her deck is obsolete. same goes for my Edgar Markov vamp tribal deck. any uncommon or common cards are just shit compared to 5$ rare cards in the last 4-5 sets.


as to fantasy generally im in your camp, never thought about it growing up, then in college heard a few "_____ is racist because the orcs/goblins/w.e. represent x, y, and z minority group". sometimes it seems valid, other times its just grasping at straws. especially because in many fantasy series whomever starts out superficially as the evil group is humanized and you change your opinion on them drastically.

Only time in life I feel left out for not knowing shit about Magic.

I remember in HS the kids that were into it were usually the smelly goth white kids.

in middle school and high school i picked up cards for old SNES systems or cash in trades. i had a shit load of old systems from garage sales when u could get an SNES or Genisis in a cardboard box at a garage sale for 20$. when someone wanted to quit i'd buy them out.

held onto a good portion of the cards and now they're worth a new card or two. wish i'd held onto more, had some power 9 cards i sold for sad low prices.....

I would say I stopped fully around grade 8 until 2017 when MTGA brought out a modern interface and what felt like reduced barriers to entry compared to the MTGO platform.

Its great for draft. Human draft if I want something more realistic. Bot draft (but you still play against real players) if I know I will need to walk away mid draft.

I picked up MTG with Ice Age, just in time to miss out on all the good, overpowered, ridiculously expensive alpha and beta cards. Unironically one of the biggest regrets of my life that I didnt pick it up one year earlier.
