It's been a very long time since I've applied for entry level jobs but it seems like nowadays there is a ridiculous amount of employers exerting downward pressure on wages by offering low paying "entry" level jobs that require a ridiculous amount of experience. Anyone a new grad facing this nonsense?

Just apply and see what happens.

More often than not the high requirements arent even requirements

Undergrad into articling student with a starting salary of 56k, obtained CPA in two years, immediately bumped to 100k plus 9% rrsp matching and typically 40k of overtime payouts annually. I rejected all initial offers of 32k when I was first leaving university but that was the average offer for those looking to go that route.

Decided I could generate more income on my own, left, began billing myself at 750 a day which is low but I'm in my mid later 20s so seemed fine.

A client had enough interest and an enjoyable project came up, I jumped back into a typical salary position at 28 for significantly more than any of the above.

I thought american salaries were considerably higher
What position is this for?

At least for computer programming or general IT, the US salaries are very cushy when compared to EU or Japan positions, about 2x better in the US. The catch is managing cost of living as our big IT hubs in the US overlap with the highest cost-of-living areas in the US. With the Pandemic, demand is up too, so the geeks have tons of leverage with employers/customers that need to be digital asap, and remote work has really opened up new possibilities to maximize cost of living.

In my 10 year, there def has been pressure on the salaries and titles for entry level employees. When I finished my undergrad, most companies still would post the job as 'Software Engineer', but now they fuzz it down with titles like "Associate Software Developer". Even better is when the entry level position still requires 5+ years experience.... Maybe kids griefing minecraft scripts count these days, but not sure how you get 5 years experience during a 4 year undergrad.

ah yes my all-time fav job posting: entry-level, 2-3 years experience required!! masters preferred!!!

which almost always ends up in an underpaid and resentful (rightfully so often!) employee who will book it the first chance they get

I've seen a lot of companies milk interns lately too. They will try to recruit them early on, then retain for 2 or 3 summers just to offer them a low-end salary position right out of college, when in actually they have ~1 year industry experience by that point, and the company would know if they worth it (or real salary). It gets comical when companies setup interns through 3-rd parties too to skirt around benefits.

lol what scummy behavior. “We want talent but not gonna pay”. i find that these firms are the ones that tend to run basic things incredibly poorly and were probably first in line to subsidy when the downturn hit in march.

This particular issue existed long before the pandemic came around
