I thought american salaries were considerably higher
What position is this for?
At least for computer programming or general IT, the US salaries are very cushy when compared to EU or Japan positions, about 2x better in the US. The catch is managing cost of living as our big IT hubs in the US overlap with the highest cost-of-living areas in the US. With the Pandemic, demand is up too, so the geeks have tons of leverage with employers/customers that need to be digital asap, and remote work has really opened up new possibilities to maximize cost of living.
In my 10 year, there def has been pressure on the salaries and titles for entry level employees. When I finished my undergrad, most companies still would post the job as 'Software Engineer', but now they fuzz it down with titles like "Associate Software Developer". Even better is when the entry level position still requires 5+ years experience.... Maybe kids griefing minecraft scripts count these days, but not sure how you get 5 years experience during a 4 year undergrad.
