This.

Make it a paid holiday.

Vast majority of polling places are within walking distance or no more than a few min drive.

The excuses for not having pic id to me are dumb. If you as an adult can't manage to get a license or a government issued pic id in 20202 then idk what to tell you. Almost all countries mandate picture id.

Having to have a picture ID isn't a controversial thing in itself. It's just that where conservatives have tried to implement it they've strategically removed voting identification and polling places based on which racial demographics are most likely to use them, which has resulted in them being struck down by courts.

If we had a good-faith effort to strengthen elections you probably wouldn't see much push-back from either side. I've just never seen that good-faith part.

And what about the perfectly legal process of people going door to door offering "assistance" to voters? <queue vague in-person threats>

There's grey areas where you can't have security. That's just part of life unfortunately. There will always be a trade off between access to democracy, and security of democracy, and which side you fall on for any particular issue depends on your values. It's hard to say you can't help people fill out their ballots with disenfranchising certain groups, and in this country when it's a right as fundamental as voting you need to have a well substantiated concern instead of vague possibilities if you want to restrict the rights.

ive heard this a lot, but unless its the blind or the tiny percent of illiterates i dont understand it. when i look at a ballot i see something so simple i dont get how anyone would need help. 5th grade scantron tests are more complicated.

unless ballots are way more complicated in certain places.

You have security for in-person voting. No one gets to stand over your shoulder making sure you mark the right box before you insert your secret ballot into the counting machine.

I'm primarily thinking of the elderly. Personally I don't really have an issue with removing these kinds of things, but it's a values decision and I can certainly see the side where if somebody can't fill out a ballot they probably don't have the mental faculties to vote... but that's a place we've been with poll testing and it doesn't really go anywhere I want to go.

You have some security for in-person voting. It's not perfect and is highly variable depending on the state, with some states having woefully insecure ballot counting machines, but it is more secure than mail-in voting. If mail-in voting isn't secure enough will depend on your values of security vs access.

hot take: senile elderly people dont deserve to vote any more than under 18 y.o. children.

You're a few years too late. I got Widow to rage on me for saying that many years ago.

old people who are senile should have less rights, anyone who disagrees with that hasnt dealt with senile old people. guns, cars, or votes in their hands are dangerous.
