This is what happens when the police lose legitimacy. They lose the benefit of the doubt of the public.
We've seen the police go out of their way to attack reporters, attack old men, beat the shit out of veterans who obviously pose no harm, and we've seen a fascism-lite response from the federal government. The riots are superficia because the police have lost the trust of the public, and rightfully so since they've refused to hold their own to account.
I'll just remind you that the saying is "one bad apple spoils the bunch", not "one bad apple can be easily removed leaving a healthy collection of apples".
The statistics on police violence simply don't bear this out. False media narratives must be held to account and politicians need to forcefully address the riots seriously to discourage reoccurrence,
The police response has been standard. Whether that standard is appropriate is a discussion for another time. The hallmark of state authority is law and order. Mayors and governors have exacerbated the issue by refusing to enforce the law. If you aren't willing to stop riots, you can hardly be surprised when they keep happening.
