The Japanese did not source a lot of their own technology and even culture. They raided mainland Asia/China, similar to what the Vikings were doing in Europe. On the flip, didn't Japs get lucky and get their asses saved by 2x tsunami which wiped out Chinese naval forces (prior WW1 and WW2)?

They definitely sourced their own culture, with the exception of their writing system which was modified from Chinese.
