Statues also venerate, and serve to define the values of a culture. Removing statues and replacing them as values change is normal.

Books and museums serve as physical reminders of the past. Statues and monuments venerate and celebrate

That means we have to remove statues of for example Martin Luther King as well. ALL STATUES HAVE TO GO, can't have that kind of celebration and veneration.

Inb4 that's racism

If society ever moves past MLKs teachings I expect that. With the Republican party being literal Nazis I expect it any day.

Don't move goal posts now or start to implement conditions. Look again at this thread's subject matter and your stance:

Last night in Madison BLM protestors tore down a statue of Hans Christian Heg, a Norwegian American journalist, anti-slavery activist, politician and soldier, best known for leading the Scandinavian 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment in the American Civil War. He died of the wounds he received at the Battle of Chickamauga.

So now the cause is about tearing down statues of anti-slavery heroes who died fighting for black rights? wtf

That's not really true about statues vs books and museums. Those serving points are interchangeable. Also, this ideology of someone looking at a statue in "celebration of racism" as I saw someone say elsewhere is ridiculous.

I mean, I would hope we never move away from the founding fathers, though it's possible since we know political groups are always trying to take away our rights.

I firmly believe that people should be following the proper mediums if we no longer want statues on display in public places. They can be moved to museums.

That doesn't mean it's right to destroy and damage in some cases what are statues and monuments that are hundreds of years old, possibly even older than the United States itself. These are historical items and irreplaceable.

I guess, that using the logic of the blacks... that it is right to tear down things that remind them of slavery...

Then it would be just as logical for those modern day Europeans (descended from the Crusaders), to tear down the Kaaba in Mecca, which assuredly reminds them of those horrible wars called the Crusades.
I mean, if we're all gonna use the logic that tearing down anything that may have had bad memories for our ancestors, then tearing down the Kaaba would be justifiable?

And how about those pyramids. I'm sure they cause consternation among the descendants of those slaves that were forced to build them.

And then there's the 7 wonders of the world. I'm sure THEY induce bad memories in some group, somewhere.

Where does this idiocy stop. Is it only OK to destroy the US's statues or monuments to our history, or do those who think it's their RIGHT to tear down anything that could possibly offend them, if they choose to be offended, that is, think that this RIGHT should be the right of anyone offended by anything, the world over?

You'd think right wingers would be in favor of this since it means the south is losing its participation trophies for the Civil War.

The classic "everyone I don't like is a Nazi" argument.

Meanwhile, California Democrats just voted in favor of retracting Provision 209 from the Affirmative Action Amendment in California. Literally removing civil right protections from discriminatory hiring practices.

You mean that you're being facetious? I'm not even sure how to read sarcasm into that statement.
