If I'm in his shoes, I'm assuming that someone is trying to kidnap me for ransom, kill me, etc. At that point, I don't know what I'd do tbh. I'd probably think I'm a dead man anyway and I'd fight.
As for your best case scenario, I'd imagine that they wouldn't be charged for murder but they'd get several years in prison. Either way, it won't end well for those two if the facts stand where they do now.
Afaik current advice for getting kidnapped/assaulted is to not let yourself be moved to another place. That drastically increases the odds of you not making it out alive.

This is a prime example of the dark side of the 2nd Amendment. And I'll remain sceptical towards the pro-gun movement until they proactively promote private gun ownership of those most heavily affected by both government tyranny and the threat of violence: minorities and those in low-income neighbourhoods.
