As I understand common core, it's more like... you have to learn these subjects AND everyone in the class has to pass. Reminds me of those kittle league games where everyone has to get a trophy.

/e We need to fix society first... then the education system will fix itself. That's one of the ways Japan has it far ahead of us. I would look up salaries for different adult jobs in Japan. I bet you won't see the disparity that you do in the US.

that's not what common core is in practice. it's just a list that's far too long of subjects that need to be covered. there's no requirement that all students must pass, or at least none that's enforced. otherwise teachers would just make tests easier to avoid punishment.

The way its taught globally? Do you realize the differences between how math is taught? In the US they try to make the dumbest of kids understand it while in Russia for example they throw formulas at people and see who gets in and they learn more advanced math.

I believe you are talking about the Prussian Industrial Education system most of the US adopted for a very long time.

@Skinned

I'm talking about how common core is attempting to redefine how we solve fairly simple mathematical problems. That way was never broken. To change it because not all 100% of students can grasp it is dumb.

Maybe Russia's way is way better considering they've been churning out Math Nobel prize winners at such a high rate?

Our issue is a societal and cultural one. We're simply not disciplined enough in comparison to some Asian cultures that strive for excellence in STEM. Lowering the standards is not going to somehow address that culture issue.

The way I was taught math was pretty dumb. It was basically just memorizing how to do it exactly the way the teacher showed you and you got marked off for not showing every remainder on every section even if you did it the same way.

It didn't actually teach us much and we had no clue how to actually apply the material. It wasn't until I got to college and they taught math more as a concept that I really started to understand it, after a 6 month struggle bus trying to adapt to the different style while working full time.

That southern square state education tho

Here in Yankee country i took 7 science & 4 maths in 4 years of HS. 2-3 were AP forgot exactly. And this was at a inner city public school level.

Same experience. People learn ways in tons of different ways. Montessori has completely failed my daughter btw lol.

Best school in Ohio is an inner city public school :) Walnut Hills High School owns all. In the middle of the fucking hood too lol.
Wyoming is up there too, which is close to me. That is more suburban.

same. we started on alegebra in 8th grade for those on the "college track". pre calc by sophmore year, i took calc and physics junior year and finished senior year with an elective math credit in computer science. all while still taking welding and Ag classes.

My education experience is typical of a loooot of people who are in those "southern square states", which is why I say we would see a big increase in the number of people for whom science is accessible if we improved science education.

It's also a great reason why we need federal minimum standards, because those kids are more or less being required to take on an additional tax to make up for their high school failings.

I love common core! Like second language classes as an example: I'm so glad my high school offered German since it really is useful and practical here in America, and taking the equivalent of 5 years of German has been was so worthwhile! I haven't used any of my German since, not even once, and have largely forgotten all of it.

Yay!
