See, and that goes to the core of all the transgender discussions: it's all fun and games to acknowledge someone's gender self-identification in a non-binding social setting. Doesnt hurt anybody, doesnt cost anything, if it makes them happy, why not.
But once specific rights, privileges, entitlements or legal protections are derived from someone's gender, basing all of this on a pre-op individual's mere self-identification opens Pandora's box.

Honestly just speaks to the fact that we should eliminate gender as a consideration in all things. Let males do whatever they want and let females do whatever they want and let intersex individuals do whatever they want, and remove all consideration for gender but leave the biological categories.

The biological categories are relatively arbitrary, sex is a bimodal classification based on groupings of attributes determined as either masculine or feminine. I.e. primary and secondary sexual characteristics. Which attributes meet the standard to be included in these categories is also relatively arbitrary. Is gender identity a sexual characteristic? I would argue so.

The whole 'biologically male/female' thing is an attempt to invalidate trans identities. Bodies can undergo significant change. Overlooked attributes may be relevant to sex classification.

Yea, gender is based on biological categories. You could call it one and the same. It only turned into somethign different when people wanted to identify as something that wasn' their biological sex and started to percieved norms as a construct around their biological sex
