It actually changes the meaning. Stealing would imply we just took it. Conquered means we killed 95%+ of them with disease and war and torture/kill the ones who object.
And actually over 50% of the Native American population was dead before the US was established and settled more out west.
Just by us arriving giving them disease, we killed over 30+% of them doing so.
Figures are estimates but the numbers are around there.
