The just judge is not also the legislator, jury, and executioner. Besides, seeing as God set the whole system up in the first place (creating laws/rules which he knew in advance that man could not adhere to) and then assigned the punishment as death and eternal torture for even a single transgression, then that is not the working of a merciful god, especially seeing as there were four thousand years of people (according to Biblical dating) who sinned and did not have the option of asking Jesus for forgiveness. Merciful? Not very.
