He is a nazi/racist who leads the local gang of skinheads. He kills a couple of black guys and is sent to prison. In there he realizes that black guys maybe aren't so bad.

We're in rare agreement. As a statement about racism, I rate this movie only slightly less highly than I do Schindler's List. Both are powerful and poignant.
