This point was brought up in a philosophy class of mine, and I heartily agree with you, though the majority of the class vehemently denied the idea that you can believe in God without being Christian or Jewish or consider yourself part of a church. Agnosticism was defined as not know particularly what to believe, whereas being a theist without a religion was supposedly ridiculous. God does not reside within a church, there should be no boundaries such as that just to consider oneself a theist, as I see it.

If you narrow atheism down to simply 'not believing in god' then you are an outright idiot.

If someone asked you why you were atheist, and you replied "Because I don't believe in god", if they had any intellect, they would shake their head in shame.
There are many religions/belief systems that do not particularly 'believe' in a god.
Do some research and live life a little bit before you declare yourself as something.

Agnosticism is the the lack of knowledge on the existence of god. It isn't that you don't know what what believe, you believe that whether god exists or not is unknown. One can both be a Christian and an agnostic at the same time, you can also be an atheist and an agnostic at the same time.
