Texas

Obviously they do not have an automated flood warning system for the Guadalupe river.

Maryland can’t even afford this system. Their governor took office in January 2023 with a 5 billion dollar surplus into a 3.3 billion dollar deficit 😂

The Department of Homeland Securoty provided funding to Maryland for flood mitigation. DHS Science and Technology Directorate assisted in 2022 with flood sensors.

They will now.

The whole idea that there was some sort of preventative measure the "government could've done better" doesn't change physical reality. Mother nature was going to do what it did and there was nothing "Donald Trump" or anyone could've done. What we can do is pray for those whose hearts feel totally empty right now because their families suffered an obscene tragedy. The fact people are trying to politicize this disgusts me.

You know 3 days in advance if you have a cell phone if there's a chance of rain. Now do you anticipate multiple damns giving way and a wall of water 40ft high becoming a death spiral of destruction? Of course not.

Tom Moser, who served as Kerr County commissioner from 2012 to 2021, told Morning Edition he advocated for a flood warning system with sirens in 2016 after a deadly flood in nearby Wimberley. That system was never built because commissioners were denied funding from state grants and there was public pushback.

This deserves to be addressed. A discussion is warranted.

Again, as you were told about 50 times, they have an automated flood warning system for the Guadalupe River. The NWS first forecast the flood warnings the day before based on projections from radar, then the imminent danger that night again from radar, and them as the flood started it was measured on gauges throughout the river and the NWS sent out multiple warnings of catastrophic flooding underway telling people to get to high ground.

The substance of the OPs complaints are baseless. This is force majeure.

A reasonable take once the recovery efforts are done would be to evaluate the zoning. From doing THOW for years, Texas was a stand out state in regards to lenient building codes and enforcements.

My hindsight thoughts are maybe some of these properties should not have been where they were.

Like in parts of my State where there are huge urban developments in former flood plains.

As for the alerting, even the best alerting systems would have not been enough here. That, and the more alerts people get the more they are ignored like the boy who cries wolf. My weather guy is accurate about 10% of the time. Thunderstorms on rainy days, clear skies on thunderstorm days. No alerts about fires fire just see smoke over trees.

Another aspect people don't realize is the US is vast, huge regions of mostly uninhabited space.

Anyways, not much take away but zoning properly. Seems flood zones from 100 years ago are acceptable building sites all over. I'm not well informed on the Texas geography, but probably would avoid building in a runoff

Here you go again bringing up Texas.

The mods need to slap a 10% on you to give you a break from PaRD.

Turning what happened in Texas into a political finger point is utterly ridiculous and uncalled for. They closed your ridiculous topic for a reason. Now get off the Texas flood being a political blame.

Just because you don't like discussing the latest news, it doesn't mean us adults can't. Now go sit at the kids table, since this conversation makes you so uncomfortable.
