An entrenched uniparty rule with neoliberals and neoconservatives mostly in lockstep and every other ideology being merely performative. Remember Futurama aired in 1999 with the joke of John Jackson vs Jack Johnson criticizing each other's 3 cent titanium tax
There was always petty bickering and faux outrage and morality crusaders, politicians cynically riding cultural fads for their own gain. But having their positions made too secure within the uniparty created unhealthy uncompetitive conditions. If they don't need to listen to their voters, don't need to fight for their seats, don't need to adapt to popular causes it led them towards being more of the teapot dome era of fatcat aristocrats deciding the country's policies in smoke filled rooms. And of course, all the opportunities for blatant corruption. They could just get away with it, because they had each other's backs. You can see how Joe Biden was old enough to hail from that era, no need to compromise, no need to find common ground with opponents, no need to weigh the pros, cons and ethics of actions before taking them.

look to europe where you can have a dozen parties represented but they're all in lockstep on their EU agenda with a socialist state tempered by minor degrees of austerity, absolutely intolerant of any opposition. Its a pretty trite observation, but competitive forces are what evolve a society towards progress, while stale and idle societies become decadent and decayed

It's odd how people seem surprised that folks are moving away from the traditional parties and are now in favor of newer \ once less popular "extremist" parties... it's almost like the old parties aren't actually doing anything! Well, they are doing something, and it's as you said, doing what the EU wants.

I know more boomers who have never voted and don't care at all than younger folks. Wisdom in age I suppose

Throughout the decades you'll find a common theme

conservatives have always been about supporting the rich, not wanting to support everyone with their tax dollars, personal accountability, racism (the side that fought to keep slavery iirc), anti intellectualism (decades of science denial), tough on crime - particularly when it's by non white people

Liberals have been about hating on the rich (and people they think are rich) , taking care of everyone with your tax dollars, lack of accountability, and soft on crime - particularly when it's by non white people

social spending vs austerity has been pretty consistent in the ideological ethos but populism vs aristocracy has not, nor intellectuals vs grug, nor racism.
they've bounced back and forth on a lot

that's how you wound up with democrats marching with signs like "scientific racism is racism" while demanding asian people be barred from college admissions. Or nuclear energy, gmos, epigenetics, etc. The eugenics movement was driven by a scientific elite of its time, the bohemian college students formed both the basis of the most regressive and progressive movements. I'm not sure crime necessarily meets that mold either, when we look to the question of fairness and institutions that gave immunity to the higher classes throughout history, its hard to boil down what that means for 'crime'. Populist movements and revolutions have been formed in response to lawlessness and gangs, not just repressive military juntas.

Was it always "my team vs their team" kind of cancer or were people more civilized? Do we have any boomers up in here who glanced at politics?

The far right needs to keep their idiotic base angry, this is how we ended up here.

The notion that this is one-sided is preposterous. I remember your idiotic angry base at Occupy Wall Street, Standing Rock, gluing yourselves to art or destroying it, blocking freeways, etc.
