Socialized education only began opt-in for northern states in the post civil war, only became compulsory across most of america by the turn of the century and mississipi was the last to require it- only starting with elementary school- in 1918. It mirrored the beginnings of our social state pre new deal. For the majority of our nation's history, there was no collective education mandate nor public expense to see it done. Its a good example of pooling taxes for the common good in a direct social benefit.
Don't be afraid to admit your position. If your solution is defunding public education, that's okay! I might even agree. As long as those illiterate kids have some other way to contribute to society.. cough, manufacturing? Hence why I voted for Trump. Twice. Although, automation will prove challenging if no one can read the manual.
