I just don't understand the rhetoric, but I'm trying.
If US doesn't wanna be involved in the conflict, then fair enough. It's really got nothing to do with the US so I understand that argument. But if it's a European problem, then I don't see why America should get anything from the continent (resources and such). If you want to stay home, that's respectable, but you can't get half the cake. That's for party goers.
It's not just a "eu problem" is it... Putin thinks that ukraine belongs to him, i.e. many of the people living there are of russian origin, and everyone else living there are neo-nazi's. As far as i've understood, that's the reason he went to war. If anyone can go to war on those grounds, the world is a free-for-all place. Everyone should back up the defendant in such a case, especially against a 10 times bigger enemy.
But still, i've wondered a lot, is ukraine for real, or is it really 50% neo nazi's and 50% pro russians? I hate to ask that question but one must have clear answers to make clear decisions.
Is zelensky a wartime profiteer by sticking it out? I really don't understand anything about the war. I want to believe he's doing the right thing. And he must be clever by staying alive with a massive force like russia attacking, think about all the spies and diplomats after him. But it must be hard too, at one side people say he's a profiteer, on the other side his country is being attacked.
I just don't understand why putin is taking so long about it. I mean i assume he must have done part of what he wanted, gotten rid of and replaced some of the leaders in ukraine. But isn't it so that "only" (quite a lot anyway) about 15-20% of ukraine is occupied? Why is it taking so long? 3 years and going? From a 10 times bigger enemy?
I personally think it's much rooted in old values, imperialism, back in the old days in russia, you led by fear and terror, that's still being upheld today.
They say it's a value conflict, i.e. ukrainians being a free people independent from old russia, which i am inclined to believe. If that is the case, the world should unite behind ukraine. The US too. But of course, there must be limits too. Can't pour billions into it with no end, nobody can expect that.
Trying to see the end of it.. must be putin dying of old age as far as i can see, 10-20 years from now there's a big chance that will happen. Then what? Maybe someone with more common sense to take his place and finally there is peace. Hopefully.
And what if ukraine gets enough help to stem the invasion and start taking russian territory? What if they advance on kreml? Will putin ever sign a treaty of defeat, giving all of russia to ukraine? Is that right? Who will share in the profits?
War is obscene. So many questions, where is the line of right and wrong. Who can tell. But i do believe in helping the underdog. It's just, is the underdog playing fair? How can we know? It seems to be a conflict stemming from 1000 years ago that's erupting today, and yes, we should help. It's just, how much help, at what cost. When does it end? Is there an end? As in the isreal-palestine thing. One god says they have the righ to live in a patch of sand, the other's god say they have the right to live there. It's never ending.
Faulty and corrupt leadership. That's the problem. We just haven't gotten far enough yet. Maybe in 1000 years, they have learned to lead societies based on realism and knowledge, and not a fantasy book and "they belong to us since we gave them their land" and such.
