Humans may be petty, cruel, and violent as hell, but we're planet-bound. Why would any extraterrestrial wish to get involved at all?

Unless it's the whole "Independence Day" or "Cowboys & Aliens" type thing, where there's something here they want that they can't get elsewhere, I don't buy it.

And even the independence day thing, AND Cowboys and Aliens thing, is stupid. All evidence points to a huge amount of the "rocks" that make up the rings of Saturn being made of ice, as well as every rare earth metal (such as gold) being included as well.

Overall, it seems like outside of possibly our atmosphere itself, there's very little any spacefaring species would be interested in, when it comes to our little backwoods planet, or her people. :)

The argument would be less about plundering earth's resources and more about nipping a potential threat in the bud. I have very little doubt that humanity will reach the point where we can begin settling planets outside of the solar system within the next 400-500 years, which is just a blink of an eye on a cosmic timescale.
