"Fighting the cartels doesn't work, say South American politician from country ruled by cartels." Meanwhile El Salvador seems to be doing just fine.

The activists mentioned are the same people who gave us Victoria. I was just visiting family there, and it's really sad to see the thousands of lives destroyed by progressive drug policy. Homeless drug addicts on every corner, encampments, people selling anything and everything on street corners. A Singaporean policy of executing drug dealers would be mercy by comparison.

Rounding them up and shooting or enslaving them is 100% effective but the leftists will always scream fascism

It's worked every single time it's been done from El Salvador to Chile, it's very simple and there is no rational argument against it that doesn't invoke the "human rights" of the terrorists

No, decriminalizing hard drug use =/= legalizing them

It's about getting those people who fell to addiction back on their feet and able to function in society, one of those steps would of course be finding out where the drugs come from and using force to cut the supply, otherwise a drug user will always go back in the end, addiction is a terribly strong force and you essentially lose rational thought altogether when under the influence

Decriminalization must be paired with strong regulation that has teeth, or else it is just legalization de facto. This is where the government has failed with flying colours especially in my province. No one has made an effort to stop the supply, which has always been downplayed by left-wing governments in favour of stopping demand (which as you said can't really be done, addiction is like that).

Isn't a left or right wing thing. It's an issue to the government entities as a whole. They both tout harsh responses one way or another and it's both the wrong answer to the problem. Cutting the supply harshly is the only way to help these people in the end, alongside proper rehabilitation programs once they are off said substances. Throwing these people in jail is a waste of taxpayer dollars, always will be

My main point is that it has been a common left wing dogma (the mainstream Hillary-type educated more centre-left type) that it is futile to go after the supply because the demand in the USA is so incredibly high that it will always weasel its way in. This has been the outcome of every conservation I've had with smart left wing people (I'm in favour of attacking the supply). This belief has been presented in all recent government policy, which has in vain tried to reduce demand by attacking "social stigma" and distributing "safe supply" and "safe injection sites". In contrast, the common right wing dogma is to attack the source of the drugs, the supply. This has been applied by right wing governments of the past e.g. Pinochet.

Perhaps the perspective on the left is switching now to attacking the supply, which is GREAT.

Quick extra note, the foolishness of the Hillary-type left wing perspective of reducing demand is driven by a fundamental misunderstanding of addiction
